Those who want a sure-fire sign as to whether the iPhone 5 has been delayed could have their answer by the end of this month. Various claims now have the long fabled white iPhone 4 surfing before April is over, and while nothing has been confirmed by Apple, such an arrival would indeed confirm that theres no iPhone 5 coming to Verizon, AT&T, or any other carrier in June, and Apple has failed to meet external calendar expectations. After all, you dont turn around and end-of-life an iPhone generation a mere six weeks after bringing a new color to market.
So lets assume for the moment that there is a white iPhone 4 coming next week. For that to be a reasonable move on Apples part, the iPhone 5 would need to be what, three, six months behind it? It would mean that the iPhone 5 is indeed delayed from its expected summer release, perhaps significantly, and that Apple is using the white iPhone 5 as a way of getting peoples minds off the iPhone 5, breathing new life into the iPhone 4 generation, and signaling to those on the fence that they might as well go ahead and take the plunge. After all, there are plenty of folks, whether theyre chugging along their 3G/3GS or looking at buying their first-ever iPhone, who are teetering as to whether to take the iPhone 4 plunge now or wait an undetermined number of months for the iPhone 5 arrival particularly on the Verizon side, where the Verizon iPhone 4 arrived at a time when the iPhone 4 was widely believed to have been more than halfway through its lifespan. But a white iPhone 4 arri val would not only make the iPhone 4 more attractive. It would also make clear that the iPhone 5 isnt coming for awhile, which is just the news needed to get plenty of holdouts to go ahead and take the plunge. It would also signal no mention of the iPhone 5 at WWDC in June whatsoever, and it would explain why iOS 5 doesnt appear to be arriving until sometime well after June./hp/hstnn-ib33.htm
But these are all ifs. Right now the white iPhone 4 only exists in the minds of those who claim its coming this month, and in Apples since-removed original iPhone 4 publicity pictures. If it does indeed come to market, itll be a sign that the iPhone 5 is still much further off than expected. But if the month goes by without a white iPhone 4, then well still bet money that the iPhone 5 is a June baby.
